April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month, and here at Gulfside Hospice, we are proud to recognize the hundreds of dedicated volunteers across our departments who help our operations run smoothly. As a nonprofit organization, we rely on the generosity of volunteers to ensure our services remain strong while upholding our mission of providing compassionate care to those in need.
At Gulfside, volunteers serve in a wide range of roles based on their skills and interests. From comforting hospice patients to supporting our Thrift Shoppes, volunteers bring warmth, dignity, and hope to individuals navigating some of life’s most meaningful moments. This April, we proudly honor the incredible individuals who give their time, talents, and hearts to Gulfside. Below is a closer look at the many volunteer roles that support our mission.
Patient-Centered Care:
Many of our compassionate volunteers feel called to serve hospice patients directly. They visit patients in healthcare facilities, offering comfort, companionship, and emotional support. Volunteers also provide respite for caregivers, ensuring families have time to rest and recharge.
Some volunteers share arts and crafts activities with patients, helping spark creativity and peace during difficult times. Their presence ensures that no patient feels alone, and their kindness brings comfort to those in the end-of-life stages.
Thrift Shoppe Volunteers
Gulfside Hospice Thrift Shoppes raise vital funds that support our nonprofit services. With four locations in Dade City, Zephyrhills, Hudson, and New Port Richey, our shoppes rely on volunteers who generously give their time to our mission.
From sorting donations to assisting customers, these volunteers help generate essential funding that directly supports patient care. Every hour spent in a shop creates a ripple of impact throughout our organization.
Administrative & Behind-the-Scenes Volunteer
While some volunteers prefer face-to-face interaction, others shine in behind-the-scenes roles. Administrative volunteers lend their organizational skills to tasks such as mailings, phone calls, event support, and office assistance.
Their contributions keep our operations running efficiently and are just as vital as direct patient care, ensuring seamless coordination across the organization.
Spiritual and Bereavement Care
Bereavement services provide structured, compassionate support during one of life’s most difficult experiences, the loss of a loved one. Volunteers in this department offer emotional and spiritual support, helping families feel seen, heard, and valued throughout their grief journey.
These services help families of hospice patients process their emotions and develop healthy coping strategies. No matter what the role, each volunteer brings comfort, connection, and compassion to those experiencing loss.
Veteran Support Services
Through our We Support Veterans and First Responders Program, volunteers honor patients who have served in the military or as first responders. Many veterans face challenges such as PTSD, traumatic brain injury, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, and a significant portion of hospice patients are veterans.
Veteran support volunteers visit veteran patients, participate in individual and community pinning ceremonies, and help organize events that honor military service. They foster camaraderie through group activities and discussions and assist veterans in accessing benefits and resources available through the VA.
Special Events Volunteers
Every year, Gulfside Hospice hosts four signature fundraising events—Hittin’ the Road for Hospice, Paulie Palooza, Charity Casino Night, and the Charity Fashion Show. These events are essential to supporting hospice patients and sustaining our philanthropic mission.
Volunteers play a crucial role in making each event a success, assisting with everything from set-up to guest greeting and many other important tasks.
